Clinical Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy is the use of that altered state for a therapeutic purpose. This means that people are not treated with hypnosis but are treated in hypnosis.
The hypnotic or ‘trance state’ is characterized by a very pleasant and relaxed sensation, which the individual allows themselves to enter. It should be thought of as a natural state of focused attention so that, desired beneficial suggestions may be given directly to the part of the mind called the subconscious. Under hypnosis, the conscious analytical part of the brain is less active, making the subconscious part which influences mental and physical functions more receptive to therapy. During the trance state there is heightened concentration for the specific purpose of maximizing potential, changing limiting beliefs and behaviors, gaining insight and wisdom.
